Alana Mansour's star on the rise

AT EIGHT years of age, Cecil Hills schoolgirl Alana Mansour is already the envy of more seasoned actors.

The Year 2 student has landed a starring role in the new sci-fi series Terra Nova.

Produced by a team led by Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, the show has been filming on the Gold Coast for the past 12 months.

Alana plays Zoe, the youngest daughter in the Shannon Family, who are the focus of the show.

Terra Nova premiered in Australia on October 2 and is Alana’s acting debut.

She described seeing herself on television as “a little weird”.

“After watching the premiere I was quiet for an hour after the show because I couldn’t believe that it was really me,” Alana said.

“Then I think the first thing I said was, ‘that was awesome’.”

The series centres on the family’s journey back in time to prehistoric Earth in an experiment to save the human race.

In many scenes Alana must interact with creatures such as dinosaurs that actually aren’t there, but are added in later by CGI technology.

She said it was a challenge which she overcame with the help of a supportive cast.

“Everyone is so good and so nice and helped me,” she said.

Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara), a devoted father with a chequered past, guides his family through this new world. His wife Elisabeth Shannon (Shelley Conn), is a trauma surgeon and together they have three children - Josh (Landon Liboiron), 17, Maddy (Naomi Scott), 15, and Zoe, 5.

Although Elisabeth’s medical training secured the family a spot on the pilgrimage, a secret involving Zoe soon endangers their place in this utopia.

But Alana wasn’t giving anything away on her character.

“All I can say is that you will love it.”

Rising star outshines dinosaurs in TV drama Terra Nova

THE dinosaurs may be 85 million years old, but the breakout star of Steven Spielberg's epic TV drama Terra Nova is a seven-year-old girl from Sydney.

Newcomer Alana Mansour plays Zoe Shannon, the youngest child of Elisabeth and Jim Shannon (Shelley Conn and Jason O'Mara), as they time-travel from the year 2149 to the era of dinosaurs.

Her co-stars are of the belief she steals the show.

"She's just perfect isn't she?" Conn said on the Gold Coast set of the show which premieres on Sunday night.

"We knew Alana was good, but she's becoming a very professional, very considered actress in her own right."

Co-star Stephen Lang, who plays Commander Nathaniel Taylor, described Mansour as a natural.

"She's got a great attitude," the Avatar star said. "She learns her stuff and when she says it, it doesn't sound like it's been slavishly learned."

Mansour shrugged off the attention; just happy to be doing a job that's "really cool, awesome". Even if it does mean feeding pretend dinosaurs - added later thanks to CGI - and having to be hidden in a knapsack.

"They made a machine with two wheelbarrows joined together like a dinosaur thing and there were two guys pulling me up, and I'm like, oh, I'm not sure,'" Mansour said.

Conn said the scene was testing for the little girl.

"When we shot Alana being lifted off the ground by the dinosaur, it was the best part of the day, she was determined to get it right," she said.

"It was boiling hot. The sun was beating down on her and she just didn't let that get in the way. We were all charmed to bits by that. I remember thinking that is going to be an iconic moment and it is when you see the show."

Introducing Terra Nova starring Alana Mansour as Zoe:

News - Dream role for Hinchinbrook youngster

GABRIELLE Ward of Hinchinbrook has scored a role that most children would only dream of.

Gabrielle, 11, who goes to John the Bapist Primary School in Bonnyrigg Heights, was chosen as one of five girls to play Jane Banks in the Disney musical Mary Poppins.

"I didn't believe my mum when we received the phone call and she told me I got the role," Gabrielle said.

"It's a massive honour to be in a production like this one."

The musical, which is based on the books by P.L. Travers and the film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, opened at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney at the start of May.

Gabrielle, who has been dancing and singing since she was three, auditioned for the role of Jane Banks last year.

"After I found that I was going to be playing Jane Banks, we had three weeks of training in Sydney and five weeks in Melbourne," Gabrielle said.

She said the best part of being in the show was working with the cast, which includes So You Think You Can Dance Australia judge Matt Lee and Australian singing sensation Marina Prior.

"The whole cast is amazing and great to work with," she said. "I have even received a few tips from the bigger stars."

Gabrielle says she would like to continue singing, dancing and acting.

"I would definitely like to work on Broadway," she said. "It's always been a dream of mine."

Talent @ Nikki Webster - Big Dreams for Little Stars: Talent and Modeling agency for kids hits Sydney

Talent @ Nikki Webster – a new cutting edge Talent and Modeling agency for kids - is opening in Sydney. From brother/sister team Nikki and Scott Webster this fresh and exciting new agency will launch in Sydney, January 2010. Talent @ Nikki Webster will offer entertainment representation to a select number of performers – all under the age of 17yrs. In the first year the agency will represent just 30 of Australia’s young actors, models, dancers, singers and musical theatre performers.

Former child star Nikki Webster has been successfully running performing arts school Dance @ Nikki Webster along side brother Scott for almost 18 months. The successful duo struck on the idea of creating a talent and modeling agency with a difference, taking a hands-on role with their clientele and providing them with auditions techniques and veteran tips of what makes a successful entertainment career they plan to steer their young team to entertainment success.

The agency will audition potential clients from all dance schools in Sydney on January 31st 2010 and will be on the look out for children who have that special star quality.

Nikki said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to work alongside and guide some of Australia’s freshest new talent! I’ll be using my experience to encourage them and steer them away from possible pitfalls they may encounter. The Australian theatre, musical and dance industry has boomed in recent years. This new agency is about guiding the careers of our young clients, we will only be taking a small number onboard allowing us to better focus on the talent we want to present to Australia. We intend to work hard for our young clients, we want Talent @ Nikki Webster to obtain the best work for the best artists – quality not quantity is our ethos.”
